Political Snapshot – 01.07.2014
In the month of July, the atmosphere was charged with political uproar and apprehensions. After the announcement of long march on 27th June by PTI, much of Pakistan’s internal politics in the month of July revolved around the anticipated march on August 14 and the rifts between the two parties PTI and PML (N). What started as an indirect conflict with PML (N) through Arsalan Iftikhar, soon turned into a legal battle between the two parties. Arsalan Iftikhar, allegedly launched by PML (N), was determined to get Imran Khan disqualified under Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution for being deceitful and unfaithful; consequently, Imran Khan also called for the disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif through similar legal proceedings.
These events set the tone for a month of political confrontations between the two major parties. On July 25, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar announced the government’s decision to invoke Article 245 of the Constitution from August 1st, calling in the military for maintaining law and order in the capital.
