The US strategy in Afghanistan has never indicated with any certainty the end state sought by the US and the strategy for achieving that state. Without this overarching direction the US strategy has never been translated into achievable military and political objectives. This, more than anything else is the primary reason for US failure in Afghanistan. Focusing on Pakistan to shift blame for strategic failure and then evolving a new or perhaps a repackaged strategy is not going to resolve the problem. Pakistan is, and will remain, a critical element in the future of Afghanistan.
Brookings convened a well-informed panel to discuss and suggest future options for Afghanistan. In this Special Report Spearhead Research reviews the Brookings Panel discussion and comments on the outcome.
