There is much talk of U.S aid to Pakistan. What is generally not appreciated is the cost to her of becoming a partner in the U.S war on terrorism.
As per the CENTCOM website in 2002, ‘Pakistan’s economy suffered a loss of over US$ 10 billion since October 2001. Major losses were caused to the civil aviation, tourism, investment and shipping due to rise in the rates of insurance.
Besides this, Pakistani exports also suffered adversely and foreign investments experienced a visible decline’ This was just in first year alone. The hemorrhaging has continued ever since.
Quite apart from this Pakistan has her own national interests. She can’t sell these for any amount of love or money.
Pakistan’s present misgivings arise out of three major issues:
- Whereas the U.S have accepted Israel and India as nuclear powers they have not done so in the case of Pakistan. Worse still, President Bush told British Prime Minister Tony Blair that he ‘wanted to go beyond Iraq in dealing with WMD proliferation, mentioning in particular Saudi Arabia, Iran, North Korea and Pakistan’ (see Douglas Jehl in The New York Times of 14th October 2005).
- There are serious doubts about the U.S intentions in Afghanistan. According to Newt Gingrich,‘The fact is, if you slow down the casualty rate and you’re not losing young Americans, the American people will support gradually growing allies for a long time’ that will make long-term troop presence in Afghanistan acceptable to the American people as happened in the case of Germany, Japan and Korea (David Rhode in The New Yorker of 22nd August 2017). In other words, it is not about terrorism but establishing permanent military bases.
- By making India the U.S strategic partner in Afghanistan it was a given, Pakistan will find it next to impossible to join in. As earlier confirmed by Secretary of Defence Chuck Hagel (http://freebeacon.com/
politics/chuck-hagels-indian-) India has been using Afghanistan as a base for supporting terrorism inside Pakistan. In the circumstances how could anyone expect Pakistan to become a partner in the game? Crude bluff, bluster and threats are no way to make allies. These cannot and will not work. problem/
